What to Pack for Gili Meno: A Practical, Edited List

What you actually need on a car-free Indonesian island, what's not available locally, and what you can leave at home. A real packing list.

Quick Answer

Light cotton and linen, two swimsuits, sandals you can walk into water with, a refillable water bottle, reef-safe sunscreen, and any prescription medication you can't replace easily. The on-island pharmacy and shops are small. Most things you forget can be sourced, but not all, and not quickly. Pack thoughtfully and you'll never think about your bag again.

Clothes

A small wardrobe goes far on Gili Meno. The island doesn't ask for a "look" each day.

Daytime.

  • Two swimsuits. One drying while you wear the other.
  • A light cotton or linen cover-up. Shirt or kaftan, both work.
  • A pair of light shorts.
  • A loose dress or two if you wear them.
  • One linen shirt for evenings. White or beige is fine.
  • Two t-shirts at most.

Evenings.

  • A long-sleeved cotton or linen layer for the breezier nights. The temperature rarely drops far, but the ocean air after dark wants a layer.
  • Smart casual is the dress code anywhere on the island. No heels needed. No jackets.

Underthings.

  • The standard. Bring more pairs than you think; humidity slows drying.

A small laundry service runs from BASK if you need it. 24 hour turnaround, fair price.

Footwear

Bring two pairs maximum:

  • Sandals or flip-flops you can walk into water with. Birkenstocks, Tevas, Havaianas. Sand and shallow water are constant.
  • A pair of light trainers or barefoot shoes. Useful for an early morning bike ride or a longer walk on uneven path.

Heels are pointless. The island is sand paths and crushed shell. Closed leather shoes don't survive the humidity.

Sun protection

Take this section seriously. Equatorial sun, water reflection, and the pace of doing nothing add up.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen. SPF 30 minimum. Brands without oxybenzone or octinoxate. Stream2Sea, Stream2Sea, Raw Elements, All Good are reliable. The conventional chemical sunscreens damage the reef the entire island depends on.
  • A hat. Wide brim, not a cap. The cap leaves your ears and neck exposed.
  • Sunglasses with UV protection. A second pair if you're sensitive about losing them.
  • A long-sleeved swim top or rash vest if you snorkel daily. Saves you from reapplying sunscreen every hour.
  • Aloe vera or after-sun. Available at the resort but bringing your favourite is sensible.

Toiletries

The villa is stocked with the basics (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap) in refillable ceramic. If you prefer specific brands, bring them. A few additions guests routinely forget:

  • Lip balm with SPF. Sun on lips is a real thing.
  • Hair tie or scarf. The breeze.
  • Insect repellent. DEET-free options work well here. Mosquitoes are not severe on the island but exist at dusk in the mangroves.
  • A small first-aid kit: plasters, antiseptic wipes, basic painkillers. Available at the resort but having your own saves a walk.

Health and medication

The on-island clinic and pharmacy is small. Anything significant means a boat to Lombok or Bali.

Bring:

  • Prescription medication for the full trip plus a few extra days, in original packaging with a prescription if you can.
  • Motion sickness tablets if the fast boat from Bali sounds uncomfortable.
  • Rehydration salts. Useful after long sun days.
  • A thermometer if you have small children.

Don't worry about:

  • Anti-malarials. The Gilis are not a malaria zone. Standard mosquito care is enough.
  • Special vaccinations beyond the standard travel set (Hep A, typhoid). Check with your travel clinic.

Tech

The island has reasonable wifi and patchy 4G. Bring:

  • Your phone and a charger.
  • A power bank for snorkel days when you're not at the villa.
  • A simple universal adapter. Indonesia uses 220V, type C and F plugs (European).
  • Headphones if you read with audio, or for the boat over.

A handful of things to leave at home:

  • A laptop unless you're working. The point of being here is not to be at your screen.
  • Multiple cameras. One is plenty. The phone is fine.
  • A smart watch you'd mourn if it disappeared in the sea.

Cash and cards

ATMs exist on the island but are limited and occasionally offline. Cards are accepted at the resort and at most restaurants and bars but not everywhere.

Bring:

  • Enough cash for tips, cidomo rides, small purchases, and a beach beer somewhere we don't run a card. Roughly two to three million rupiah per person for a week is generous.
  • A debit card and a credit card. Different banks. Indonesian ATMs occasionally reject one and accept the other.
  • A small wallet you don't mind sandy.

Snorkel and beach gear

Provided by BASK at no charge:

  • Mask, snorkel, fins (sizes from kids to adult).
  • Bicycles.
  • Towels for pool and beach.
  • Beach bags for the day.

Bring your own if you prefer:

  • Your own snorkel mask if you have a prescription one.
  • A waterproof phone case or housing.
  • A reef hook or float buoy if you're a serious snorkeller.
  • A book. Real, paper. Reading on the beach with a Kindle in glare is harder than it should be.

What you don't need

Things first-timers over-pack:

  • Heavy walking shoes. The island is small.
  • Formal wear. Linen and a smile is the brief.
  • A full medicine cabinet. The basics, yes. Beyond that, no.
  • Sand toys for kids if you're staying at BASK; we have a stash.
  • A drone unless you really want one. Flying over wildlife corridors is restricted in places.

A note on plastic

Single-use plastic is the visible problem on small islands. The resort has removed it from food and beverage operations, and we'd ask you to bring:

  • A refillable water bottle. We refill across the property at no cost.
  • A reusable coffee cup if you're a takeaway-coffee person.
  • A small mesh laundry bag, optional, for wet swimsuits inside your suitcase.

Small actions across many visitors are how this island stays clean.

The honest packing test

The night before, lay everything on the bed. Then put a third of it back. Most guests over-pack for Gili Meno and use a third of what they bring. The island rewards a small bag and an open day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a pharmacy on Gili Meno?

A small one, with basics. Anything specific (prescription medication, particular brands) is hard to find. Bring what you need.

Can I buy reef-safe sunscreen on the island?

Yes, in small quantities at the resort and a couple of shops. Better to bring enough for your trip from home, where the selection is wider.

What should I wear to dinner at BASK?

Resort smart. Linen shirt, a light dress, sandals. No need for a jacket or heels. The kitchens take the food seriously; the dress code stays gentle.

Do I need warm clothes?

A light long-sleeved layer for evenings. The temperature stays warm year-round. You won't need anything heavier.

Can I do laundry on the island?

Yes. BASK has a 24 hour laundry service. Outside the resort, a few small laundries handle drop-offs.

What kind of power outlets does Indonesia use?

220V, type C and F (two round pins). A standard European-style adapter works.

Are credit cards accepted?

At the resort and most restaurants, yes. At smaller bars, beach warungs, and cidomo drivers, cash. Bring some rupiah.
