Things to Do on Gili Meno: A Considered List

Snorkel The Nest, ride a bike at golden hour, find the salt lake, dive the wall. The most worthwhile things to do on Indonesia's quietest Gili.

Quick Answer

Most of what's worth doing on Gili Meno happens in or near the water. Snorkel The Nest. Visit the salt lake. Walk the perimeter at golden hour. Dive the wall. Eat slowly. Sit somewhere with a view of the sea and let an afternoon pass. The list is short on purpose; the depth of each item is the point.

Snorkel The Nest

The underwater statue circle off the west coast. Reachable directly from the beach in a 10 minute swim. The light through the water in the morning is at its most cinematic. Cover this once early in your stay so you can return on a quieter day.

Full guide to snorkeling The Nest.

Find the salt lake

A small inland saltwater lake hidden behind a fringe of trees on the west side of the island. A short walk or a 10 minute bike ride from BASK. Herons, mangrove roots, a strange light. Most guests stop here briefly and remember it for the rest of the trip.

More on the salt lake.

Walk the perimeter

The island is small enough to circle in roughly two hours at a relaxed pace. Most guests do it once early in their stay, then settle into a smaller daily rhythm. Sunrise on the east side has Mount Rinjani in the distance. Sunset on the west has Mount Agung. Both are worth a separate walk on different days.

Bike at golden hour

Free bikes for guests at BASK. The sand paths get soft in stretches, so the fat-tyred cruisers are the right tool. Riding the perimeter as the light turns honey-coloured is one of the most underrated pleasures here.

Swim with sea turtles

Green turtles and hawksbills are common in the seagrass meadows off the west coast. Snorkel from the beach in the morning and you'll often see one or two. Keep distance, stay above, don't chase. Full turtle guide.

Dive the wall

Gili Meno's dive sites are quieter than Trawangan's and include some of the best macro photography in the area. A small wall drops from 5 to 30 metres on the south side. The Bounty wreck and a handful of less-trafficked sites are 20 minutes by boat. Diving guide.

Eat a long lunch

A genuinely valid activity here. Beach club for a fish lunch with a glass of crisp white, or Pomona for something more considered. Don't rush. The afternoon doesn't expect anything of you.

Watch the sunset on the west

The west side gets the colour. If the sky is clear you'll see Mount Agung in Bali silhouetted across the water. There's a small bar two coves north of BASK. A coconut, a beer, a moment.

Stargaze

No light pollution on the island. On a moonless night the sky is absurd. Lie on the beach or on a daybed by the pool and look up for ten minutes longer than you think you need to. Worth doing once, twice, every night.

Swim before breakfast

The water is calmest, the light is at its best, the beach is empty. A 20 minute swim before coffee resets the day. Most guests stop trying everything else once they discover this.

A few less obvious things

For guests who've covered the headline list:

Visit the turtle hatchery at the south of the island. A small volunteer-run operation that protects nests and releases hatchlings. Donate if you visit.

The mangrove edge at the north. Quieter than the rest of the island. Best reached by a cidomo or a long walk. Birdlife is good in early morning.

A donkey cart loop after dinner. Some operators do a slow night ride. The clop of the hooves is a sound that stays with you.

An afternoon in the village. Gili Meno has a small local community in the centre. Friendly, slow, worth walking through. Buy a coffee from one of the warungs.

Local boat-builder visit. Occasionally available depending on who's working that week. Ask the activities desk if you're interested in how the boats here are still made by hand.

Things we'd skip on a short visit

Honest opinions:

  • A daytrip to all three Gili Islands in one day. It's offered. It's exhausting. Pick one and stay.
  • Booking a daily activity for every day of your stay. The island works on subtraction. Two strong things per day plus open time is the better arc.
  • Booze cruises. They exist. They're not our crowd. Plenty of better ways to spend a day here.

What to do when the weather turns

Wet days happen, even in dry season. A few good fallbacks:

  • A long lunch. Build the day around it.
  • The spa. In-villa massage that arrives at your door.
  • Reading day. No guilt. Most guests come here partly for this.
  • A movie at the villa. Or, the kind of nap that lasts three hours.

Pacing across a typical stay

A loose suggestion for a four-night stay:

  • Day 1: Arrive. Swim. Long lunch. Sunset on the west. Pomona for dinner.
  • Day 2: Snorkel The Nest in the morning. Beach club lunch. Spa. Rosalee for dinner.
  • Day 3: Bike to the salt lake. Lunch wherever you ended up. Long afternoon. Dive or boat snorkel. Light dinner.
  • Day 4: Walk the perimeter early. Last long lunch. Quiet departure.

Most guests rearrange the order. Few add more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gili Meno boring?

It's quiet. That's different. The activity list is short on purpose; each item has depth, and the island rewards stillness between them.

What's the number one thing to do on Gili Meno?

Snorkel The Nest. Walk the perimeter at sunset. Eat slowly. Those three together are the spine.

Are there activities for non-swimmers?

Yes. Bikes, the salt lake walk, the spa, the restaurants, sunset bars, the turtle hatchery visit, stargazing. Plenty without getting wet.

Is Gili Meno good for honeymoons?

Very. The combination of quiet, food, water, and small-scale resorts is unusual. Most honeymoon guests stay 5 nights and many extend.

Can I daytrip from Gili Meno to the other islands?

Yes. 10 to 20 minute boat hop. Public hopper runs through the day. Easy to combine.

Is everything walkable from BASK?

Yes. The island is roughly 2 km by 1 km. Nothing is more than a 25 minute walk; most things are 10 minutes.

Do I need to book activities in advance?

For diving, yes, ideally a day ahead. For the spa, same day usually works. For walking, snorkelling from shore, biking, no booking needed.
