A Spa Morning at BASK: What an In-Villa Massage Looks Like

Our spa is quiet, simple, and comes to your villa. How the in-room massage works, what to expect, and the small ritual we've built around it.

Quick Answer

BASK's spa offering centres on in-villa massage rather than a large spa facility. A small team of skilled therapists arrives at your door with a folding table, oils, and a quiet pre-set rhythm. 60 or 90 minutes is standard. The experience is more like a guest staying in your villa than a clinic visit, which is the point.

Why we built it this way

A traditional resort spa is a destination: a building, a reception, a robe, a queue, a treatment room. We made a different choice. The villas at BASK already have the right ingredients (privacy, soft light, sea air, a place to be quiet for an hour) so the spa comes to them instead.

The trade is we don't have ten treatment rooms. We have a small set of therapists who work in your villa for the day, then go home. The quality is higher because the focus is narrower.

How to book

A few options:

  • Via the BASK Concierge app. Same-day if there's a slot, ideally a day ahead in high season.
  • Speak to the activities desk at reception or in passing.
  • Ask your villa host.

We try to confirm within an hour. If your preferred time isn't available we'll suggest the next two options.

What arrives at your door

When the therapist comes:

  • A small fabric folding table. Quietly set up where you'd like in the villa. Most guests pick the bedroom or the outdoor terrace if the breeze is calm.
  • Fresh linens. The therapist brings everything.
  • Oils in a glass bottle. Coconut-based, lightly scented. Stronger scents available if you'd like them.
  • A small portable speaker for ambient sound if you'd like it. Most guests prefer the wind in the palms and the ocean. Tell the therapist either way.
  • Water for you afterwards.

The setup takes five minutes. The therapist will leave the room briefly while you change.

The treatments

The menu is intentionally short. Each treatment is done well rather than offering a thousand options:

Classic Balinese massage. Medium pressure, long strokes, palm and thumb work. The default. 60 or 90 minutes.

Deep tissue. Stronger pressure, focus on specific areas. 60 or 90 minutes. Communicate during the treatment if you'd like more or less; the therapists are trained to adjust.

Aromatherapy massage. Lighter pressure, more focus on scent and slow breathing. 60 or 90 minutes. Good for first-night decompression after long flights.

Foot reflexology. A focused 45 or 60 minute session for tired feet. Lovely after a long walking day.

Couples massage. Two therapists, side by side, in your villa. Synchronised opening and closing.

The menu is the menu. We don't do hot stone, scrubs, signature wraps, or branded protocols. The team is small and the depth in what we do offer is the trade.

What 90 minutes actually looks like

A typical session:

  • 0 to 5 minutes. Brief conversation about pressure, focus areas, scent preferences. You lie face down, covered.
  • 5 to 35 minutes. Back, neck, shoulders. The long structural stretching that most guests need.
  • 35 to 55 minutes. Legs and feet. Often the most surprising part. Hours of walking on sand and the legs feel it.
  • 55 to 65 minutes. Turn over. Arms, hands, chest, abdomen as appropriate.
  • 65 to 85 minutes. Face, scalp, slower work.
  • 85 to 90 minutes. Quiet finish. The therapist leaves you to rest. Water arrives. Don't get up too quickly.

Pacing it in your day

A few honest sequences guests fall into:

Arrival day. A 60 minute aromatherapy massage after settling in. Unpicks the flight tension. Sleep is better that night.

Day three. A 90 minute deep tissue session. By day three the body has shifted into vacation mode and the deeper work lands properly.

Pre-dinner. A 60 minute massage at 17:00. Then a slow shower, a glass of something cold, dinner at Pomona at 19:30. One of the best evenings BASK offers.

Couples version. A side-by-side session in your villa, then dinner at Rosalee. Common for honeymoons.

What to do before and after

Before:

  • Drink water. The treatment moves fluid around.
  • Skip the heavy lunch immediately before; a light meal is fine.
  • Take a quick shower if you've been in the sea so the sunscreen is off.
  • Tell the therapist about anything they should know: injuries, surgery, pregnancy, allergies.

After:

  • More water.
  • Rest for 15 to 30 minutes if you can. The benefit lingers.
  • Avoid the sun for an hour. Oiled skin burns faster.
  • A light dinner that night sets you up for excellent sleep.

What it costs

The pricing is set and listed in the menu at check-in and in the concierge app. It's generous for the quality and the privacy of the room. There's no surcharge for in-villa versus a treatment-room option; everything is in-villa.

A gratuity is appreciated but not expected. Many guests add 10 to 15 percent if the session was particularly excellent. The therapists are paid fairly regardless.

Specific considerations

A few things worth knowing:

  • Pregnancy massage. Available, with a pregnancy-certified therapist. Mention it when booking. We adjust the position and pressure appropriately. From the second trimester onwards.
  • Mobility issues. The treatment table sits at a comfortable height for getting on and off. If standing is hard, mention it; we adjust.
  • First-time guests. Tell the therapist. They'll explain each section quietly.
  • Modesty. You stay covered throughout except the area being worked on. Underwear stays on if you prefer.
  • Sensitivity to scent. Unscented oils available.

What we don't do

  • No medical massage with diagnostic claims. Our therapists are skilled but not licenced physiotherapists. For injury rehabilitation, ask your home practitioner.
  • No sales pitches. No upgrade attempts during the session. No "would you like to buy our oils." The room stays a room.
  • No phones. The therapist doesn't carry one in. You'll be reminded to leave yours in another room.
