Bali and the Gili Islands: A 10-Day Itinerary

A realistic 10-day Bali and Gili Islands itinerary with the right pacing, a proper Gili Meno stretch, and honest advice on where the time goes.

Quick Answer

Ten days is the honest sweet spot for a first Bali plus Gili Islands trip. Spend three nights easing into Bali, four to five nights on Gili Meno as the anchor, then one or two flex nights for either a Gili Trawangan or Gili Air day trip, or a slow return via Ubud. Longer than 10 days is bliss. Shorter, and the boat days eat too much of the calendar.

Why 10 days is the sweet spot

Bali plus the Gili Islands is really two holidays stitched together. Bali is dense: rice fields, temples, traffic, surf, food, culture, a lot of moving parts. Gili Meno is the opposite: no cars, no motorbikes, sand paths, salt water, quiet.

Ten days gives both sides room without rushing either. It also absorbs two boat days without feeling like the trip is mostly transit. Under a week and something gets sacrificed. Over two weeks and the pace slows further, which is either a dream or too much stillness depending on the guest.

The rhythm at a glance

Days Where Vibe
1 to 3 South Bali or Ubud Land, adjust, do one memorable thing
4 Crossing to the Gilis Boat day, arrive at BASK, swim
5 to 8 Gili Meno The anchor. Slow. Water. Books.
8 or 9 Optional day trip Gili Trawangan or Gili Air by short hop
9 to 10 Return to Bali or fly from Lombok Reverse the transit or bolt on Ubud

Use this as a shape, not a script.

Days 1 to 3: land, adjust, don't overbook Bali

Most international flights land in Denpasar in the evening. Don't try to do anything meaningful on arrival night. Book a hotel close to the airport or a driver-friendly spot in Seminyak, Canggu, or Ubud, and go to sleep.

Then, for two full days, pick one Bali flavour rather than three:

  • South Bali (Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu) if you want beaches, surf breaks, café mornings, and a livelier evening scene.
  • Ubud if you want rice terraces, jungle, temples, and a calmer base.
  • Sidemen or Amed if you want quiet Bali away from the tourist arteries.

Do one big day out. A sunrise volcano walk, a proper Ubud loop, a full day of surfing on the Bukit, a temple day, a cooking class. One well-chosen day is worth three rushed ones. The other day is for waking up slowly and eating well.

Don't try to do all of Bali in three days. That's how the trip stops being a holiday.

Day 4: the crossing

Take a morning fast boat from Bali to the Gili Islands. Morning departures are calmer, more reliable, and give you the whole day at your destination. Common departure points are Serangan, Padangbai, and Amed. From Ubud, allow two to three hours by car to the harbour, and pad for traffic.

Full details, routes, operators, and timing are in our dedicated guide to how to get from Bali to Gili Meno.

You land in the early afternoon. Drop bags, order a swim-side lunch, don't plan anything else. The first afternoon on Gili Meno should be doing nothing at all.

Days 5 to 8: Gili Meno as the anchor

Four nights is the minimum for the island to actually work its trick. Three nights and you're leaving as you settle in. Four to five is when the rhythm arrives.

A loose shape for a typical day:

Slow morning. Long breakfast (champagne is on the table, take advantage), swim, read.

Mid-morning water. Snorkel The Nest, the underwater sculpture by Jason deCaires Taylor, off the west coast. Turtles are a near-guarantee somewhere along the reef. If you dive, book a two-tank morning with a local operator.

Long lunch. Beachfront tables, no rush.

Afternoon. Nap, spa, or a cycle around the island. The full loop is short and mostly flat; anyone can do it.

Sunset. West-coast beach. The Bali silhouette across the water on a clear day. A cocktail. Music at BASK if you want people, quiet stretches of sand a five-minute walk away if you don't.

Dinner. Pomona for a proper meal (bold South American flavours), Rosalee for a more intimate room. Both are on site.

Repeat, slightly varied, for four days. That's the point.

For a fuller list of what fills the hours between the swims, see our things to do on Gili Meno guide, and our deeper dive on snorkelling The Nest.

Optional: a day at Gili Trawangan or Gili Air

Short public boats connect the three Gili Islands several times a day. On day 8 or 9, some guests hop across:

  • Gili Trawangan for a lively lunch, a dive shop visit, or the evening bar scene.
  • Gili Air for a quieter, food-driven day at a laid-back café.

Both work as day trips. Neither is essential. If Gili Meno has genuinely slowed you down, skip the hop and stay put. If you want a contrast, half a day on Trawangan is plenty.

Days 9 to 10: return options

Three clean options depending on your flight home:

Option A: back to Bali. Morning fast boat back to south Bali. One last Bali night in Seminyak or near the airport for an early flight. Simple, no surprises.

Option B: fly out from Lombok. A short local boat to Bangsal, a driver to Lombok International (BIZAM), then a domestic flight to Denpasar or, occasionally, a direct international flight from Lombok. Longer on the day, but cuts a boat return.

Option C: bolt on Ubud. Fast boat back to Bali, then straight to Ubud for two more nights (which turns this into a 12-day trip). Ubud rewards guests who arrive already relaxed, and after four days on Gili Meno you are exactly that.

Pick based on flight cost, not romance. The right departure city is whichever gets you home for a reasonable fare.

An alternate split for repeat visitors

If you've done Bali before and want the Gilis to headline, flip the ratio:

  • 1 to 2 nights in south Bali on arrival, just to reset from the flight.
  • 6 to 7 nights on Gili Meno.
  • 1 night back in Bali before flying out.

This is the shape most returning guests eventually settle on. Bali becomes the airport city. Gili Meno becomes the holiday.

What to skip on a 10-day trip

Some honest cuts to protect the pace:

  • A Nusa Penida day trip from Bali. Long boat, long drive, long day. Cut it. If you love the Nusa islands, that's a separate trip.
  • A "see all three Gilis in a day" plan. One island as your base. Optional half-day hop. Anything more is transit.
  • Ubud in a single day out and back from the south. Either commit two nights or skip it.
  • A packed final morning on Gili Meno. Save your last morning for the beach, not for rushing to a boat.
  • Overpacked evenings. Two out of ten nights are for actual dinner plans; the rest, keep loose.

A quick note on timing within the year

Peak season (June to September) is dry, sunny, and busy. Book Gili Meno well ahead if travelling in this window.

Shoulder season (April to May, and October) is often the sweet spot: calmer seas, warm water, quieter beaches.

Rainy season (November to March) is milder than most travellers expect: short bursts, plenty of blue between, meaningfully lower prices.

A note on booking

BASK has 13 villas in total. Inventory is small on purpose, and the good windows in peak months go early. If you're planning a trip in July, August, or around Christmas and New Year, book four to six months ahead where possible. For shoulder and rainy seasons, six to eight weeks out is usually enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for Bali and the Gili Islands?

Ten days is the honest minimum for both sides to feel complete. Seven days is doable but sacrifices either Bali culture or Gili Meno stillness. Twelve to fourteen days is comfortable and lets you add Ubud on the return without cutting the beach stretch short.

Should I do Bali first or the Gili Islands first?

Bali first. Land, adjust, do one memorable Bali day, then travel to the Gili Islands and slow down. Reversing the order works but tends to send you home more tired than needed.

Which Gili Island should I stay on for the middle of the trip?

Gili Meno if you want quiet, boutique stays, snorkelling, and slow days. Gili Trawangan for a livelier scene. Gili Air for a middle ground. Our full comparison covers the differences in detail.

How long is the fast boat from Bali to the Gili Islands?

Roughly two to two and a half hours from south Bali (Serangan or Padangbai), and shorter from Amed. Morning boats are calmer than afternoon ones. Full details are in our Bali to Gili Meno guide.

Is it worth flying out of Lombok instead of Bali?

Sometimes. If your international carrier prices a Lombok exit reasonably, it saves you a boat crossing back. If the fare gap is large, take the boat back to Bali and fly from Denpasar.

Can I do Bali plus Gili Islands in a week?

Yes, but expect to compromise. Two nights in Bali, three or four on Gili Meno, one night back near the airport. Doable, not ideal, and the boat days will feel proportionally heavier.

When should I book, especially in peak season?

For July, August, and around New Year, book Gili Meno four to six months ahead. Villa inventory is small (13 in total), and the good windows disappear early.

Is Ubud worth adding at the end?

Yes, if you have the days. Ubud lands differently after Gili Meno: the pace is easier to accept, and the jungle-and-rice-fields contrast to the beach is a satisfying finish. Two nights minimum.
